History of the Lovespoon

It's unknown exactly when lovespoons started being made in Wales, but we do know is that the oldest lovespoon, kept in the St Fagans National Museum of History collection,  dates back 1667. The collection consists of roughly 200 lovespoons, most carved during the 18th and 19th century.

Lovespoons are commonly thought to have originated as romantic gifts made by a man for a girl/woman they admired. They would have carved them with a great deal of care and dedication. It was given as a symbol of love and affection, pieces of art worthy of their loved one. Each one was special.

Traditionally presented as romantic gifts, they are now commonly given as gifts to mark special occasions, including weddings, christenings, anniversaries, and birthdays. Over time, their purpose has changed dramatically, especially since the middle of the 20th century, when the need for mass-produced versions started.

Luckily, there are lovespoon carvers, such as myself, still making them by hand, the traditional way, and hopfully it will continue for years to come.
